Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance found in your blood. Your body needs some cholesterol to function properly because it helps with:

  • Building cells
  • Making hormones (like estrogen and testosterone)
  • Producing vitamin D
  • Helping digest fats in your food

Your liver makes all the cholesterol your body needs, but you also get it from certain foods, especially animal products like meat, dairy, and eggs.

Why Is Cholesterol Important?

While cholesterol is essential for many body processes, having too much of it can be harmful.

If your cholesterol levels are too high, it can cause fat deposits to build up in your arteries. Over time, this makes it harder for blood to flow, which can lead to heart problems or strokes.

Types of Cholesterol

There are two main types of cholesterol:

  1. LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein) — This is the “bad” cholesterol. When you have too much LDL, it sticks to the walls of your arteries, leading to blockages. High levels of LDL increase your risk of heart disease and stroke.
  2. HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein) — This is the “good” cholesterol. HDL helps remove the bad cholesterol (LDL) from your bloodstream by carrying it to the liver to be broken down and eliminated. Higher levels of HDL reduce your risk of heart problems.

What Causes High Cholesterol?

A combination of lifestyle, diet, and genetics can affect your cholesterol levels:

  • Diet: Eating too much saturated fat, found in processed and fried foods, can raise your LDL levels.

  3. Quit smoking: If you smoke, stopping can improve your HDL levels and overall heart health.
  4. Medication: In some cases, doctors may prescribe medication to help lower cholesterol, especially if lifestyle changes aren’t enough.

High cholesterol is one of the biggest risk factors for heart disease, which is the leading cause of death worldwide. By managing your cholesterol levels, you reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases.
